Intradiscal injections involve precise placement of therapeutic solutions directly into spinal discs to address disc tears, degenerative disc disease, and discogenic pain. This advanced procedure is performed under fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance to ensure accurate needle placement in these small, challenging-to-access structures.

Important: The majority of our spine procedures use platelets and target facet joints, ligaments, and nerves rather than the disc itself, as disc injection is more complex and reserved for specific situations.

Understanding Discogenic Pain:
Spinal discs act as shock absorbers between vertebrae. When discs develop tears in their outer layer (annulus), nerves grow into these tears causing pain that worsens with sitting, bending, and lifting.

The Procedure:

1. Pre-Procedure Preparation
   Detailed MRI review to identify disc pathology and confirm disc as pain source.
2. Fluoroscopic Guidance
   Under continuous X-ray guidance, Dr. Ghattas:
   • Advances a needle through back muscles to the disc
   • Confirms position within disc using contrast dye
   • Injects therapeutic solution (typically platelet preparations or bone marrow concentrate)
   • May treat multiple disc levels if indicated
3. What We Inject:
   • Platelet-rich plasma or platelet lysate (most common)
   • Bone marrow concentrate (select cases)
   • Combinations based on individual assessment

These preparations aim to support your body’s healing response in the disc, reduce inflammation, promote healing of annular tears, and improve disc health.

Total Time: Plan for 2-3 hours for complete visit
